HMD Global, a Finnish company renowned for producing and releasing Nokia-branded smartphones through an agreement with Nokia six years ago, has unveiled its intentions to introduce smartphones under its independent "HMD" brand soon.
CEO Jean-François Baril made this revelation via a LinkedIn post, where he highlighted that HMD Global is presently the fastest-growing 5G smartphone company in terms of year-on-year growth. He emphasized the company's dedication to sustainability, exemplified by their introduction of highly repairable smartphones over the past year.
Baril also indicated HMD Global's readiness to enter the smartphone market autonomously, with a vision to create a new era of communication tailored to consumer preferences. Importantly, these forthcoming HMD-branded smartphones will coexist alongside the existing Nokia phones.
HMD Global takes pride in its position as one of the largest smartphone companies in Europe and aspires to offer high-quality mobile devices at affordable prices to a global audience in the near future.
This announcement comes at a time of intense competition in the smartphone industry, with major players like Apple, Samsung, and various Chinese firms vying for market dominance amidst recent declines in smartphone sales. HMD Global seeks to differentiate itself in the global smartphone market by placing a strong emphasis on sustainability and competitive pricing, though a specific launch timeline for their new HMD-branded smartphones has not yet been disclosed.
